About the Area:

Myrtle Beach, SC

Myrtle Beach is the largest city on the Grand Strand with more than 25,000 residents. Before European explorers discovered the area, Waccamaw and Winyah Indians named it Chicora, meaning “the land.” It was part of the Withers family property in 1900 when Burroughs and Collins, a timber and turpentine company, constructed a railroad to the beach and built the first hotel called Seaside Inn (oceanfront lots sold then for $25).

A group of investors set the tone for the resort in the 1920’s when it opened the 300-room Ocean Forest Hotel with indoor and outdoor pools, a health club, horse stables and the area’s first golf club. It was torn down to make way for new development with the exception of the golf club, now the Pine Lakes International Country Club, to which Golf Digest awards a four-star rating.

In 1936, the Intracoastal Waterway opened to pleasure boats and commercial shipping, followed in 1940 by the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, which patrolled coastal waters during World War II.

Today you can find a golf course within 15 minutes of wherever you are, dine at more than 1,700 restaurants, jet ski, windsurf, sail, or kayak. When evening falls, choose from Broadway musicals jousting tournaments, big-name concerts, and variety venues at a dozen world-class theaters. The shopping is equally fabulous, ranging from thrifty outlets to unique boutiques. Myrtle Beach has it all!
